History
Alejandro Velez created the Sage Project to address the major disconnect between the tutoring and mentoring programs that he had been a part of throughout high school and college. He noticed that the relationships developed around a stringent academic curriculum did not emphasize the most important aspects of mentoring, the lasting effects of one-on-one connections between mentors and mentees. As a result, Alex began developing a program that would build "real" connections that, with consistent time and effort by the mentors, would turn into powerful relationships. As a sophomore in college, Alex established a one-on-one mentoring program, The Sage Project, founded upon providing youth with personal connections to UC Berkeley mentors through activities that directly foster life skills and encourage personal growth.
